Larry Mullen Jr. is playing drums again after undergoing neck surgery that forced him to reconsider how he performs behind the kit.
Speaking about his recovery, the U2 drummer explained that years of performing had aggravated a congenital neck condition and eventually caused serious pain. Doctors warned that continuing without treatment could threaten his ability to play, leading Mullen to undergo surgery and spend several months recovering.
Returning to the drums required more than simply rebuilding strength. Mullen found that his body responded differently after the procedure, prompting him to adjust his technique. He has since focused on a simpler and more efficient approach to playing rather than trying to reproduce his previous physical style.
Questions remain about how much live performing he can comfortably handle. Mullen has acknowledged that full-length concerts may present challenges, while shorter appearances could be more manageable.
His return has already extended to the studio, where he has been recording with his U2 bandmates as the group works on new music.
